According to a study published in the journal Food & Nutrition Research, eating a handful of nuts and seeds can help you reduce the risk of heart disease by 25%. The findings of the study showed that nuts lower cholesterol levels and are linked to a lower risk of cardiovascular disease.

The researchers explained that one of the most common factors contributing to this health benefit is the composition of fatty acids in nuts. Researchers from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden and the University of Oslo in Norway carried out a systematic review and meta-analysis of 60 studies and found that the chance of developing cardiovascular disease can be reduced by 20 to 25% if an individual consumes a handful of nuts each day, or about 30 grams.

However, the lead author of the study noted that people never consume nuts or seeds. As per the researchers, almonds, pistachios, and walnuts appear to be the best for lowering cholesterol, but there is no conclusive evidence for recommending specific kinds of nuts over and above others.

They noted that nuts have a positive impact on blood cholesterol levels, which should be kept low to avoid the buildup of fat in the arteries.
